I heard an illustration once about a magician who kept pigeons tethered to a wheel and he had those pigeons walk continuously in a circle as part of his show. At some point, he decided he was ready to retire that particular part of his act and released the pigeons from their respective tethers. Much to his amazement, the pigeons continued walking in a circle, perfectly equidistant from one another as if they were still leashed. This illustration has stuck with me all these years because I often wonder if I am like those pigeons.

Yesterday, we rejoiced together in the Hope that is found in Christ and in the pure joy there is in celebrating His resurrection. It is because of that very resurrection that we are free! Do we live that way though, or are our actions defined by Proverbs 26:11, “As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly”?  1 Peter 2:16 commands us to “[l]ive as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.”

Do not be a slave to world. Do not stay tethered to the old life you once lived. Walk in confidence and faith, be mindful of your thoughts, attitudes, and actions, and live in the awesome freedom that is found in Christ.
